Passenger traffic at John Wayne Airport fell 1.3 percent in November from the same time last year – but the possibility of a new airline at the local destination could give the numbers a boost in the new year.
A total of 690,859 passengers came through JWA in November, down from 700,223 in the same month last year.
However, airport spokeswoman Jenny Wedge said the airport is "closing the gap" on passenger traffic compared to last year, and it could be a sign that air travel is stabilizing a bit.
In addition, WestJet, a low-cost Canadian carrier, this week conducted a noise test at JWA, marking the first step in the process of starting service at the airport.
The company flies to 71 locations in Canada, the U.S., the Caribbean and Mexico, though no destinations have been announced for JWA, said Wedge.
If the airline passes the noise test, among other approvals, service could start some time next year.
